Humbling our souls...

"On exactly the tenth day of this seventh month is the day of atonement; it shall be a holy convocation for you, and you shall humble your souls and present an offering of fire to the Lord."--Leviticus 23:27.  This is another one of the many laws found within the book of Leviticus.  Within the context of Leviticus 23:26-32, the word humble is found 3 times and the phrase "humble your souls" bookends these verses.  While the sacrifice was required, it seems what was more important was the humbling of the souls.

Humbling our souls.  First and foremost, we have to understand that we are no longer under this system of sacrifices as they are part of the old law (Hebrews 8:7-13) and also Christ has already made the ultimate sacrifice for our sins through the cross.  But what about humbling our souls?

Humbling our souls.  When I looked up the definition of the word humble in this verse, one of the definitions I found was to be bowed down to or even to be afflicted.

Humbling our souls.  So what does it mean to humble our souls before God?

Humbling our souls.  Humbling our souls involves realizing that our souls don't even stand a chance of spending eternity in heaven without God's grace and mercy.

Humbling our souls.  Humbling our souls involves realizing that our souls are afflicted by this disease known as sin and that only God can heal us from that disease.

Humbling our souls.  This concept also involves realizing that God is the only one who can truly provide for our needs, both physical and spiritual.

Humbling our souls.  Leviticus 23:27 shows us that before a sacrifice is to be made, the Israelites first had to humble their souls.

Humbling our souls.  If we expect to please God and make sacrifices to Him in the way the New Testament describes, we must first humble our souls and realize that we are truly nothing without Him.

Humbling our souls.  So my encouragement to you is this.  Humbling our souls sometimes means stepping out of our comfort zone to do the Lord's work.  One way we can humble our souls and do the Lord's work is having the courage to talk to someone we know is lost about the gospel message or having the courage to get more actively involved in a particular area of ministry in the church. I encourage to do something along these lines as you humble your soul before God.

Humbling our souls.  Once again, humbling our souls begins by realizing we don't stand a chance at eternity in heaven without God's mercy and grace which can only be gained by first obeying the gospel and seeking to obey all that Christ has commanded.  This all begins by first humbling our souls.

DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT! PRAY ABOUT IT! LOVE Y'ALL! GOD BLESS!
