Unauthorized Worship...

"Now Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took their respective firepans, and after putting fire in them, placed incense on it and offered strange fire before the LORD, which He had not commanded them."--Leviticus 10:1.  Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron the priest make an attempt at worshipping God.  The text tells us that they offered "strange fire" which God had not commanded.  We find in Leviticus 10:2 that they were punished for worshipping in a way that was not authorized.

Unauthorized worship. Nadab and Abihu were making an attempt at worshipping God.  There is not anything wrong with that so what was the problem?

Unauthorized worship. The problem with Nadab and Abihu's worship was the fact that God had not commanded this type of worship.

Unauthorized worship.  So what does this mean to us? As we read through the pages of the Old and New Testament, one thing we learn about God is that He is very specific in what He expects of us, including in the area of worship.

Unauthorized worship.  A common excuse when discussing this with people is "Well God did not say we could not worship Him in this way" or some variation of that statement. Chances are Nadab and Abihu were of this same mindset when they did what they did.

Unauthorized worship.  Even today, God is still very specific as to what He expects from His Church in the area of worship.  Ephesians 5:19 and Colossians 3:16-17 are two of several verses that tell us how we ought to be worshipping God. To deviate from what God has specifically commanded can put us in danger of losing our eternal salvation.

I encourage you to look at the Leviticus account further and look further into the New Testament as to how God expects to be worshipped.  Worshipping God needs to be done according to His standard, not our own.

DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT! PRAY ABOUT IT! LOVE Y'ALL! GOD BLESS!
