Keeping your soul: Part 1...

"Only give heed to yourself and keep your soul diligently, so you do not forget the things which your eyes have seen and they do not depart from your heart all the days of your life..."--Deuteronomy 4:9.  Moses, encouraging and urging Israel to remain faithful to the commandments which God has given.  In Deuteronomy 4:10 and following Moses would go on to remind the people of what happened at Sinai.  It is because of all these things that they are to keep their souls with diligence.

Keeping your soul.  Moses tells the people to keep their souls diligently.  According to the Hebrew definitions, Moses is saying they need to preserve or take care of their souls with diligence.

Of course, in this context keeping one's soul was contingent upon staying faithful to the Mosaic Law.

So the question we need to ask ourselves today as members of the Lord's church who are no longer under the Mosaic Law is how do we keep or preserve our souls today?

Keeping your soul.  Well first and foremost, we of course have the commands of Christ lined out in the New Testament.  Furthermore, we are not under law but under grace (Romans 6:14).

Since we are not under law but under grace, this first does NOT mean that we have a license to sin freely (Romans 6:1-2) but it does mean that when we do sin we must trust in the redemptive work of Christ to cleanse us of said sin.  This process begins when we come into contact with Christ's blood by being baptized into Christ (Romans 6:3-4).

So the question remains, how do we keep or preserve our soul? Well since grace is not a license to sin freely, keeping our soul can be very practical in nature.  We can do this by examining our lives and asking what sort of things are we allowing into our homes and into our lives?

Keeping your soul.  We know from passages such as Matthew 22:37, Mark 12:30 and Luke 10:27 that we are to love the Lord with all our heart, with all our soul, with all our strength and with all our mind. To love Christ is to keep His commands (John 14:15).  But how do we love God with our mind? Again it comes down to what we are allowing into our homes and into our minds via the different media sources we have available to us.

Keeping your soul involves constantly examining our lives through prayer and the study of God's Word to make sure we are doing all we can to align our lives with His will.

Keeping your soul.  So see what it is you might be able to do that would be conducive to keeping your soul.

DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT! PRAY ABOUT IT! LOVE Y'ALL! GOD BLESS!
