A more excellent name...

"Having become as much better than the angels, as He has inherited a more excellent name than they."--Hebrews 1:4.  The Hebrew writer describing how Jesus is better than the angels and ultimately better than the old system of law that these Jewish Christians are contemplating returning to.  The Hebrew writer declares that Jesus has inherited a more excellent name than the angels.  He has inherited the name, the Son of God, a more excellent name.

A more excellent name.  Hebrews 1 from verse 4 forward goes on to illustrate why Jesus is of a more excellent name.

A more excellent name.  In Hebrews 1:5 we find that Jesus is of a more excellent name because God specifies that Jesus is His Son and that He has begotten Him.  Also, God specifically says that He is Jesus' Father and Jesus is His Son.

A more excellent name.  In Hebrews 1:6, Jesus is of a more excellent name because all the angels are to worship Him.

A more excellent name.  In Hebrews 1:8, Jesus is of a more excellent name because He too is also referred to as not just the Son of God but simply as God.  These two previous points point to the fact that since Jesus is to be worshipped, He is in fact God.

A more excellent name.  In Hebrews 1:9 Jesus is of a more excellent name because He hates lawlessness and loves righteousness.  Therefore, God has anointed Him above His companions.

A more excellent name.  In Hebrews 1:10-12, Jesus is of a more excellent name because it is acknowledged that in the beginning Jesus laid the foundation of the earth and the heavens are the work of His hands.

A more excellent name.  Finally in Hebrews 1:13, Jesus is of a more excellent name because God told Him and Him alone to sit at His right hand until His enemies were made a footstool under His feet.

A more excellent name.  A more excellent name was given to no man and to none of the angels but to Christ alone, the Son of God who in fact is God.

A more excellent name.  If we expect to spend eternity with God, we too must wear this more excellent name by obeying the gospel of Christ and committing our lives to following Him.

A more excellent name.  Most people, if not all are proud of the name their parents gave them but we all have the opportunity to wear a more excellent name, the name of Christ by committing our lives to follow Him and put His commands found in the pages of Scripture into action.

Jesus Christ, not just a more excellent name but the most excellent name. His name is the Greek form of the Hebrew name Joshua which means Savior.  Coincidence? I think not.  Wear that name proudly and may your life reflect that you wear that name.
